The game

Sitting in her chair at lunch DD puts her cup of milk down.

Looking at me, she says, “more, more” while touching her fingers together repeatedly to also sign the word.

“More milk?” I ask. And she responds, “peez”. (please)

I walk to the fridge with DD’s cup. As I pour in more milk, I glance over at her.

DD’s arms are covering her eyes and she waits quietly for the game to begin.

I say, “Chicken? Where are you?”

A giggle.

I call out, “Chicken…Chicken? Are you there?”

As I walk back with her milk, more giggles.

Beautiful brown eyes peek out at me between arms still raised.

A gentle poke to the belly as I set her milk down. DD pulls her arms away from her face and laughs in excitement.

“Oh, there you are!”

With small determined hands DD picks up her cup and drinks.

The game over for now. I hope it’s years before it ever gets old.

That is so sweet! Yes, the game will get old, but the great thing is that there will be more to come. It is amazing — the things they will come up with 🙂

My guys hide like that regularly during dinner – they think it’s hilarious 🙂 Each stage brings new and fun things… at least so far for me 😉

This game is hilarious. I don’t know why DD finds it to be so funny but literally the minute I get up and start walking to the fridge she’s in hiding mode and giggling away.

Haha. You have a chicken, I have a monkey. 🙂
Zac is soaking up the signing as well. Thanks so much for recommending the Signing Time DVDs. He asks for them by name now. He’s got “please, more, help, hat, up (more spoken then signed), out, …” It’s sooo much better than him just screaming at me – which I can totally forgive, considering his lack of words.

Nancy – I’m so glad your monkey got into the Signing Time videos. Isn’t it wonderful to see them communicate with you – and such a relief you can understand! 🙂

Love it! There will always be fun little games. I have an 11 yr old daughter and the “games” seem to change and get more sophisticated over time, some last longer than others, but those sweet moments keep coming. For me the challenge is being present enough to see them and fully appreciate them in the moment. Thanks for the reminder to keep looking.

Exactly right, Susan. To be present enough to see them and appreciate the moment. Yes. 🙂

I love the stage where they think that you can’t see them just because they can’t see you. 🙂

I sometimes hide from Reid by covering my eyes. She giggles at my silliness and at the stories of her silliness from when she was little. Six is so grown up, after all.
