i wish it was like jam
spread thickly, sticking sure to everything
delicious variety too – providing a sweetness
that smothers sorrow and bitter discontent
giving life bright colour and flavour
jars of happiness, delight – opened, shared
with more cellared in our hearts
for those future days of need

If joy stuck thickly to everything, we’d take it far too much for granted and it wouldn’t feel as joyous as it does. But, I really wish it could. Days full of joy rather than worry or hurt would be wonderful for the world.

I think joy does spread thickly, and while you can’t can it, it does leave a residue that you can lick off your fingers later. Plus if you look you can find little hidden sticky fingerprint reminders that it, and you, have been there before.

Hi Mel, I wasn’t feeling particularly joyful when I started writing my post but when I finished, I was happy. But yes, there doesn’t seem to be enough joy…I was in a long brainstorming meeting yesterday for a big human rights event this fall and it wasn’t easy to see the brutalities that so many people endure in so many parts of the word. Love the jam comparison.
